Prime Hydration gets the Shadow Foam treatment

Something a bit different this week as Prime Hydration gets the Shadow Foam treatment. We’re not usually one to jump on a bandwagon. But having done some work with Kon Films recently and seeing the work he does with KSI and the Sidemen clan, we just wanted to see what all the fuss was all about. So we put all the current Prime flavours to the test (so you don’t have to!) And we try to establish what we, at Shadow Foam towers, think is the best Prime flavour. And of course, we have to do something a bit funky with the product too!

About Prime Hydration

First thing to say is we can’t believe how much this Prime hydration stuff sells for. And moreover how hard it is to get hold of. At the time of making our video it was super hard to get hands on this. But because we know how much people love it we wanted to get together 5 complete sets so that we could give them away as competition prizes. A sixth set was for the unsuspecting team Shadow Foam members to taste test!

Prime Hydration is collaboratively backed by Youtube sensations KSI and Logan Paul, and therein lies much of it’s popularity, especially among kids. Prime Hydration apparently contains 10 per cent coconut water, electrolytes and B vitamins and BCAAs and has zero sugar or caffeine and only around 20 calories per bottle according to it’s manufacturers. But does it live up to the hype?

Shadow Foam taste test all Prime flavours

It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it! Here’s what the collective here reported back on all the Prime flavours (to date) that we tested on our mission to find the best Prime flavour.

Blue Raspberry

According to Matt, it didn’t ‘smell’ blue!? Though Donna thought it smelled pretty lush. It didn’t look blue either, more a cloudy water appearance. It was Dylan’s choice for a refreshing drink on a hot summer day. But neither Nathan or Joe were impressed… it didn’t taste like the flavour to them apparently. A mixed set of results. 3.05/5

Grape

Now on paper, this should have been Jonathan’s favourite. Tim and Donna were also pretty excited to try this one, and Matt seemed to like it. However, three testers resounded “not for me” on tasting it – some saying it left a strange after-taste and Dylan even comparing it to Calpol! 2.75/5

Ice Pop

On face value we thought the bottle was one of the cooler designs, but the contents were described as looking like dirty dish water! Matt and Dylan liked the taste of this one especially though, and most people thought it tasted really sweet. Fortunately, Nathan resisted the temptation to spit his out, but the bulk of the testers seemed to like this one. 3.43/5

Lemon Lime

At first taste, this one nearly broke camera man Matt. Jona and Nathan both thought it just tasted like really watered down squash, and yet it scored Nathan’s highest score of the test. None of us were quite sure what Dylan was thinking when he described the flavour as “like a clean room in a hospital”! But Donna scored this our first 5/5 of the taste test though, so maybe disinfectant is her thing. 3.4/5

Meta Moon

This one doesn’t offer any description as to what it should taste like, but it’s actually pink if that offers any clues. Matt’s ‘Pungent’ description perhaps doesn’t compliment it too well though he would buy a candle of it if they made them in that scent. According to Nathan, it smells like he imagines the moon would. This one definitely wasn’t for Mike though, with a very definite “NO!” 2.81/5

Orange

This one was, well orange. And it tasted of orange… many thought like orange squash. Jona pointed out there wasn’t even a hint of coconut water in there. Not one for Tim or Dylan though this one who were very disappointed and scored it low. 3.01/5.0

Tropical Punch

Most people found this one really sweet and sherberty. As Mike said if you drank a lot of it you’d be left with fussy feeling teeth! And a couple mentioned that it didn’t smell like it tasted – Jonathan said it definitely didn’t smell tropical. Most of the boys rated this one pretty highly though… coming in at 3.48/5

Which is the best Prime flavour in our taste test?

Fair to say the results were pretty divisive! But here’s the rundown of which we think is the BEST prime flavour:

  1. Tropical Punch
  2. Lemon Lime
  3. Ice Pop
  4. Blue Raspberry
  5. Orange
  6. Meta Moon
  7. Grape

Our Prime storage display

As usual, because you know we love an Ikea Hack, we used an Ikea frame. For this project we used the Sannahed 50mm frame.

We are going to use a piece of our 50mm Shadow Foam which is 50cm x 50cm so it fits perfectly in the frame. For this we basically cut one of our Medium Sheets in half, so you could basically make two frames from just one medium sheet if you wanted!

We planned our layout which was 5 bottles in the bottom then one either side of a Prime logo that we wanted to cut into the centre of the top. In terms of cutting the bottles into the foam, we just used our usual process. Utilising the cutting and safety equipment that we include in our cutting kits, we began cutting.

Once happy that all the bottles were cut snugly into the foam, it was time to turn our attention to the logo. For more detail on how to create a nice custom logo on any project, watch here.
